Xiaomi’s new camera came out a few weeks ago so we thought we should check out the differences it has from the old one, and if it’s here to replace it. We tested a Xiaomi Yi and a Xiaomi Yi Car DVR and here is what we figured out.

Xiaomi Yi is designed to be used with different mounts you can use to attach it to different things, while Xiaomi Yi Car DVR is designed to be used with just one mount that helps you attach it on a car.

Size and Weight.

  • Xiaomi Yi is smaller measuring 6.1 x 2.2 x 4.2 cm, and slightly lighter weighting 72gr with the battery.
  • Xiaomi Yi Car DVR measures 7.4 x 1.94 x 5.24 cm, and weights 74gr with the battery.

Photos and Videos.

Photos taken with Xiaomi Yi and Xiaomi Yi Car DVR

Xiaomi Yi resolution: 1080p 60fps, 720p 120fps, 480p 240fps.

Xiaomi Yi Car DVR resolution: 1296P 30fps, 1080p 60fps 30fps.

Screen.

Xiaomi Yi Car DVR has a screen, when Xiaomi Yi doesn’t so you have to use the app if you want to change the settings, record, and view the pictures and videos. It’s definitely an advantage when you have a screen on the camera cause you don’t need to use your phone, and you don’t need to turn on the WiFi and pair them.

Features.

Both cameras have a lot of different features. One of the most important differences is that Xiaomi Yi Car DVR has the ADAS system.

Battery.

Xiaomi Yi Car DVR has a 240mAh battery that lasts for just about 5 minutes so it’s not the camera you want to use when you’re planning to take a lot of pictures or record videos if you don’t have a power bank or a plug next to you. It’s a dashcam so it’s made for always being plugged to your car charger. The camera only includes a 204mAh battery because if you have a big battery in something that’s in your car it will get damaged after a few months, so it’s safer to have a small one. Even if it had a bigger battery it wouldn’t last long if you leave the camera in your car, so you’ll have to remove it every time you’re done using it.

Xiaomi Yi on the contrary, has a 1010mAh battery that lasts for a much longer time.

Memory Card.

Xiaomi Yi supports an up to 64G micro SD card and it’s recommended to use a class 10 memory card for better results. It still works with a slower one though.

Xiaomi Yi Car DVR needs a class 10 memory card with speed more than 80Mb. We used a slower one and we found out that unless it was a class 10 memory card, it didn’t even work. You couldn’t film or take any pictures.

App.

Xiaomi Yi’s app is available in English and Chinese, but Xiaomi Yi’s Car DVR is available just in Chinese at the moment.

Accessories.

Xiaomi Yi comes with just a cable for charging it and transferring photos; you have to get an extra mount you need yourself. There are a lot of different accessories available for Xiaomi Yi so you can attach it pretty much everywhere. Xiaomi Yi is also compatible with GoPro accessories.

Xiaomi Yi car DVR comes with a charging cable, a car charger adapter, and a bracket, so you don’t need to get anything else.

Price.

Both cameras cost about the same. Xiaomi Yi costs US$75.89, and Xiaomi Yi Car DVR $79.99.

Conclusion.

The cameras are made to serve two completely different purposes. If you need a camera to use it during action sports and trips, Xiaomi Yi is the one you’re looking for, it has an almost year-long run of one of our most popular action cams. If you need a dashcam to mount in your car, the Xiaomi Yi Car DVR is a new player with some advanced ADAS tech that makes your journey safer.
