Predicting the weather has never been more cooler; the YGH-392 cobblestone weather station clock keeps not only your time in check but also the temperature, humidity and combined with its outdoor sensor it also takes a punt at the weather. Its a nice looking piece of eye candy that captures the technical measurements and presents them in a stylish way. We had it for a few hours and this is my experience…

Setting up the YGH-392
Setup is simple all you do is plug it in via the USB cable, either directly to your PC or the included charger. The receiver is also placed outside or in another room then it will take the basic measurements and display the actual readings throughout the day and night.

The outdoor sensor.
The unit is about half the size of a TV remote and all you need to do is plug in 2 AAA batteries and it automatically starts taking measurements. Devices using batteries suck as this means they need replacing; to reduce consumption, the communication is not advanced, it is an older RF frequency that is basic but consumes only a fraction of what a WiFi or Bluetooth connection does. With some good batteries you shouldn’t need to pop a new pair in for at least a few months.
The included screwdriver is used to pen the remote case and install the batteries.

If you are wanting to monitor a few rooms you can add up to 3 transmitters: When setting up each sensor must use a different frequency channel.

Using the alarm.
The basic alarm allows you to set a standard daily alarm. To turn off the alarm you press the whole clock own and it presses a button on the bottom of the Cobblestone. The button works well, however I would not use it as my regular alarm as its tall narrow shape means it can easily be knocked over and possibly damage that smooth shiny surface.
The sensor is rated for 30M but that is line of sight, so it would not go so far if there were buildings or a roof in-between the mounting spot and the clock.
What does it measure?
It is not a highly advanced setup and you can go hard core and get a full weather station kit with wind speed and water collection but that is a lot to setup, the YGH-392 is instead is ready to go and just needs the remote placed outside or in another room, simple and stylish.

How do weather stations know the weather?
The don’t exactly but they are programmed of the basic relationship between temperature, humidity and the clouds so they accurately guess what should be expected. This reading of course will not be accurate unless you use an outside sensor as your home is often different to outside. Don’t expect 100% accuracy, even the weather channel predictions are often not accurate and they use more advanced stuff than this. I see it as a novel way to measure weather and would still check my phone but it is a handy temp and humidity measure for your living room and inside outside temperatures.

Worried about knocking it over?
They have cut back on the cobblestone design with their cube weather station clock. It offers the same features with a more standard clock style.
If you are intending to use it as a alarm clock on your bedside table then this is much more stable and has a large snooze button that comes in handy on those early wake-ups.
