If you venture out into technology dangerous environments that could destroy your regular phone the Zgpax S9 is designed to stay by your side when other phones would drown or get clogged with dirt.

The performance

If you are after a computing powerhouse look elsewhere. Like most rugged phones,  it lacks the super resolution screen and top of the line processor and instead focuses on physical strength and mult-fuunctional specs. Aside from the usual IP65 and tough case, this Chinese phone does come with its own unique set of features. Compared to other rugged models the Zpax S9 has these advantages;

  • A full UHF 400-470 mHz radio with 32 channels;
  • A red laser pointer on the top;
  • A large 4100mAh battery that has enough juice for a few days of use as a phone and a day if using the radio.

The radio

To use the UHF radio you need to attach the included antenna into the top of the phone. IPAX uses a standard SMA connector so you always have the option of replacing it with any standard SMA antenna or signal booster.

After checking the book and the radio app I couldn’t find any info on the exact strength of the radio, all we know is they state up to 4KM range so, based on other radios I would estimate between 0.5W to 1W max output for the UHF transmission, but don’t quote me on that.

Operation of the radio consists of 3 buttons on the side and using the included app. The app is simple and just requires you to set the desired frequency channel. It runs in the background and you can press the PTT button to transmit , the radio operates independently of what you are doing on the phone.

The Laser

Just like a laser pointer only it is included in the phone. If you are in the outdoors or working in construction this feature may be useful as you can point to things far away our out of reach and not need to worry about carrying a laser pointer.

Laser Pointers
The laser lens in the middle shoots out a red beam that is turned on and off by using the included laser and LED app.

The battery

The large 4100 mAh battery keeps your 2 sim-cards and the UHF radio working for longer and is more then enough if you can charge it daily or every other day.

Other accessories

The other accessories included are the charger, headphones and a strap with the key to unscrew the back cover.

S9 Design aspects

Back vocer unscrewd and battery removed
With the back cover removed and the battery taken out you can see the dual sim card slots (one is normal size and one is micro) and the MicroSD card slot.
Included Acessories
The included charger is 1.5A USB.
The manual
The brief but informative manual showing the details of the UHF radio and has decent English for a Chinese product.
The opening ports
The only water weak point is the bottom USB and headphone ports which are sealed with a big rubber plug. It’s a strong seal and not easy to accidentally pry open but it is still a risk.

ZGPAX crafted this tough kit to attract those who need a UHF radio without the hassle of having 2 devices, it is not the most powerful transmitter and does not have dual band (VHF) but for the price they have done a solid job.  The S9 comes in 3 colors and is just one of our many rugged phones, be sure to have a look for the current cost and full specifications.

This quickly passed through the office but if you have any  questions I can probably get it back for some more testing.
