VR is continuing to grow in popularity and although a lot of that tech has a big price tag, you can get a similar experience at a fraction of the cost with standard VR glasses and your phone.

The screen resolution is the most important factor in the experience. Aside from comfort and focus, the actual glasses don’t do much. The phone and its screen and software are much more important to your end experience.

Your phone slides into the glasses and is the screen for the VR experience.

With this logic, even the cheap Google cardboard style setups, although not as fancy or comfortable are capable of delivering the same punch from your phone.

Cardboard glasses
Even a cheap cardboard set of VR glasses will give a similar experience, just not particularly comfortable to use.

What kind of phone is good for VR?

phones of all shapes and sizes
Under 6 inches is best and the higher the resolution, the more real it will look.

Any phone with an HD screen resolution that is smaller than 6 inches should provide a good experience. Most phones now are HD or higher and will be adequate.

If your phone is only 720P, it is still usable. However, you can easily see the individual pixels. The Mezu we tried was also not pixel free but much less noticeable (Full HD). If you are looking to actually watch movies, a phone with full HD or higher will look better and also be nicer on your eyes.

Once your phone is sorted you also need a good VR app.

Just a search for “VR” apps on the Play Store gives you an endless number of apps that will work with these glasses. We tried the popular Google Cardboard, and it offers a range of apps inside the basic app. You can watch your video in massive cinema-style screens and even take your own fully 360-degree photos. You can view your photos in virtual reality so when you move your head you actually move around the picture, just like you are really there. You can also download famous landmarks and locations to view in real 3D. You can even make your own VR videos.

This is what your screen will be like when running a VR APP, the view is split in half for the left and right eye to perceive 3D

Aside from the novelty factor, you can enjoy an excellent 3D cinema experience, and I’m sure it takes playing games to the next new level.
