Well, we actually just walked to the bus and sat on the bus for an hour, its the middle of summer and already super hot without getting physical. So we just turned it on and jumped on the bus. This post is an extension of our MiFit 2 review post.

How the Mi Fit 2 records a workout.

We put the app into running mode; this activates the heart monitoring and GPS tracking, the periodic averages offers not based on time but on the distance traveled, so each KM you reach will record the average in the workout log. As the band does not have an internal GPS,  you need to take your phone with you to get the GPS record.

During the run, you can access the main running page [Left] the map of your run [middle] and the distance summary [right].

Exercise data the Mi band 2 records.

  • Heart rate record – It shows the full heart record it seems to not be a live reading in the app and periodically updates the value.
  • Distance map – accurately uses GPS to track your movement and gives a distance traveled and tracked on the map. We were in China, so google maps didn’t load, but the path was still recorded(see in the middle screenshot above).
  • Calories burned  – Calculates based on heart rate and your personal info the estimated burnt calories
  • Pace- Based on the speed and steps of your journey it calculates your average pace per kilometer.

The Xiaomi shoes (we didn’t know existed) are able to be combined with this band, and you can get even more info on your running style.

How accurate is the Xiaomi MiFit 2 band heart rate?

miband-8

For our primary test (with a finger) the results were similar to what the miband detects. We didn’t investigate too profoundly as based on the light sensors method it uses, provided the band is strapped on securely it will get a precise reading. During running mode the readings are automatically taken, in normal mode, you can press the button on the band to take a reading.

What about the pedometer?

The 1S band was known for over recording steps as some movements would be counted as a step. To reduce this error, the Mifit now only begins to record your steps if you make 10 or more consecutive steps, this greatly reduces the chance you just swinging your arm or scratching your head is recorded as steps. So don’t be shocked if you notice your actual steps are a bit lower with the Miband 2. It is not under recording your steps, it is just not so easily fooled by other movements.

The Xiaomi Personal Trainer

Overall we were impressed with the Xiaomi, although many have similar specs the true benefit is the great Mi-Fitt app that gives you a lot of extended support. Xiaomi offer some useful personal trainer options to assist you in training under the Workout settings.

Before you start, after the basic setup, you can program your minimum pace to keep you up to speed and also set your peak heart rate. There is also some useful fitness related pages to assist you in your training.

With a great app behind it and the proven track record of the Xiaomi fitness bands, this latest addition has given a much-needed screen upgrade.
