Now you can have the benefits of a smart home connected home without the possible invasion of privacy bringing a microphone into your home brings. Project Alias is a software and hardware device that sits on top of your smart speaker and completely covers the microphone, the speakers of the Alias box then feed the microphone constant noise, unless you say the activation word, the smart speakr hears nothing but noise.

What does that mean?

This means your Alexa or Google cannot listen in when you are not talking to it. The Project Alias box is not connected to the internet and was not designed and cannot be hacked to record and send info out. This means you have a completely offline device that functions between the Alexa/Google mic and your voice.

How to build it

You need to build it yourself. The software is open source, what you need is to do is get a Raspberry Pi and load the system onto a micro SD card. A Raspberry Pi coasts around $30 plus you need the microphone and speaker array.

You also need the case, you need to 3D print the case, as the popularity of the device grows you will likely be able to buy them as well.

Instructables shows you all steps to build the Alexa and Google home privacy device.
