If you’ve grabbed the Elekstube and are looking for instructions on how to build it, here are some clear instructions on the whole process. You can build it in about 20 mins.
How to build the EleksTube kit
Section 1: Build the display
- Take the platform board with all the holes and slots cut in it and put in 24 screws.
- Lift the board an put the bottom board on the top, the screws will push through the other side of the platform board.
- Hold the two boards together and flip it around and place it on a desk.
- Place the LEDs onto the board matching the screws with the led board holes.
- Slide a spacer washer on each screw.
- Put the black light grid layer on top of the led boards.
- Put the number pane layer on top of the light grid layer.
- Screw the tall standoffs onto all screws.
- Put the second number pane layer on top of the light grid and screw in the top screws
- Slide in the number panes (starting from the back 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0)
- Carefully remove the top screws and put the top pane cover on.
- Reinstall the top screws to secure the display. Repeat steps 9-12 for each separate digit.
Section 2: Build the base
- Take the 2 long base rods and slide 2 square nits into the top groove
- Turn it over 180 degrees and also slide 2 more into the base
- Join the base arms to the base rods
- Rotate the base rods so 2 nuts are facing upwards
- Place the display on top of the base and slide the square nuts to align with the screw holes in the display base.
- Screw the display to the base with 4 screws.
Section 3: Connect the electrics
- Flip the Elekstube over and connect the lights together using the red cables with mini connectors in a series. There is an odd number of connectors so the last one will only connect to one lamp. Let it hang unconnected.
- Take the bottom board and push 4 screws into the holes around the 3 holes in the board.
- Carefully hold the screws and flip the board over, the same way as when you built the display.
- Slide the spacer washers over the screws.
- Slide on the control PCB over the area with 3 holes. Make sure the 3 buttons are facing down and align with the 3 holes.
- Secure the PCB by screwing the 4 bolts on top of the PCB
- Align the bottom board with the base of the Elekstube making sure the PCB end is on the same end as the unconnected red cable.
- Align the 4 square nuts with the holes in the bottom board
- Connect the red cable to the PCB
- Place the baseboard on the Elekstube and screw in the 4 screws.
If you’ve followed these steps your Elekstube is now built and ready for programming with your computer.
