The ability to boil and egg or not is often used as a benchmark in deciding whether someone is a terrible cook or not. However the relatively simple process certainly has room to create problems:
- Firstly there’s making sure you’ve got an appropriate size pan for the number of eggs you want: a single egg in pan full of water isn’t very efficient, whilst several crammed in to one pan may effect the cooking process.
- You might have to wait for a while for the water to reach boiling point before you can begin timing.
- Depending on what kind of cooker you have, the water might boil too fiercely or not hot enough. If the boil is too strong, this can cause the eggs to crash into each other or the pan, occasionally leading to cracking, which is something I have certainly experienced.
- Lastly, you’re reliant on setting a timer somewhere which you then need to react to, otherwise the eggs will continue to boil away and make for a harder egg than you might have liked.

Place all your eggs in the one tidy egg basket, (usually not good advice), fill the measuring cup with the right amount of water, (as indicated) depending on whether you want a soft boiled egg, medium or hard boiled, put the water into the cooker, place the lid y flick the switch. You can also experiment with just the right amount if you like to be very particular about how you like you your eggs.
The handiest feature of this little steamer though is that it will automatically switch off when the water has evaporated from the hot plate at the bottom.
Its lightweight construction makes it easy to move around your kitchen or in and out of the cupboard; it’s got an attractive, fun design and perhaps most importantly it’s very easy to clean.
The cooker can also be used as a poacher or steamer for other foods, whether vegetables or portions of soup, so it’s not one of those gadgets that is so specific in its function that it takes up more space than it’s worth – especially as it has such a compact design.
