Spending $50-100 on simulator software like RealFlight or Phoenix often saves thousands of dollars by preventing the destruction of your first real aircraft.
Connect your actual RC transmitter to your computer with a USB cable. This teaches your hands exactly how the controls will feel in real flight, not something similar. You can crash endlessly without buying a single replacement part. A real mistake with your plane means damaged components or buying a new kit.
Before flying a real model, you should be able to consistently take off, fly, and land several different virtual aircraft.

Most trainer aircraft balance about one-third of the wing’s width back from the leading edge. Support your plane with your fingers at the marked CG points. The nose should dip slightly downward. If it points up, add weight to the front. If it dips sharply, shift weight toward the back.
A slightly nose-heavy plane is much more forgiving. Check the CG multiple times before flying. This single step prevents more crashes than anything else.

Secure the clevises: Those plastic or metal connectors at the end of your control rods can pop open during flight. Use small rubber bands or short pieces of fuel tubing to keep the control rod connectors from opening during flight.
Verify structural bonds: Make sure the fuselage is fully glued together and all major parts are firmly attached. Loose or poorly bonded parts can fail in the air, often ending the flight instantly.

Settings include:
Reduce control throw: Set your control surfaces to move only about 70% of their maximum range. For your very first flight, consider limiting elevator and aileron to just 40-45%.
Add exponential: This softens stick response around the center, which helps you avoid over-correcting when you panic (and you will, a little).
Use a fully charged battery: Only fly with batteries charged that same day. Old or partially charged batteries cause power drops and erratic behavior.
