Projectors are breaking the pricepoint where you can enjoy a large screen with acceptable quality for much less than a flat-screen. Breaking down this barrier is Blitzwolf with their BW-VP1.

What makes it awesome

  • High lumens to price: With 1800 lumens and a $70 price tag you can’t get more brightness for a projector of this standard for less.
  • 720p: Clear enough at large sizes the movie is still enjoyable, this means you can truly enjoy a whole wall video provided you don’t sit super close. This, of course, assumes you are using a 720 or better video source.
  • LCD: Offer better price-performance and higher contrast than low-cost DLP tech. With no color wheel, the VP1 also has no rainbow effect so it is ideal for sensitive users.
  • Compact and light: Easy to carry and does not require a heavy-duty bracket if mounting on a wall or ceiling.

What it’s lacking

It might deliver a solid picture, but at this price point, you don’t and should not expect everything a top-end projector offers.

  • Advanced built-in system: there is a limited built-in system, mainly for viewing content from a USB stick or hard drive. Overcome this easily by connecting your PC or TV box.
  • Multiple inputs: If you need multiple HDMI inputs you’ll need a splitter or an AV receiver. If you don’t mind swapping cables or have no need for multiple inputs, it’s not an issue.
  • Digital focus: Some projectors offer automatic focus, the VP1 manual focus is low cost, easy to use and still achieves the same end result( a focused image).
  • Big throw distance: The other points are easy to remedy, but this is the only thing that could limit its attractiveness. If you need a short throw, the VP1 can’t offer that. For most theater setups and presentation/travel use it is not an issue, however, if you want the biggest screen possible in a small area you might hit a limitation.
throw ratio for BW vp1
This is the distance to screen size of the BW-VP1, provided the size you want fits in the room you use it in, it’s ideal. Short throw projectors offer big screen sizes even when really close to the screen, something essential for tiny rooms, but not for any regular-sized living room.

Overall

Ideal for home cinema

Partner it with your PC or TV box and a home theater speaker system for a full movie at home experience. With the curtains closed this projector will really shine. A TV of equivalent size is many times more expensive.

Ok for travel/presentations

The built-in speaker is powerful enough to use as a standalone device, for simplicity, this means if you can fit your media onto a USB drive or stick, all you need to project is the projector. If you are looking for a daylight/ bright office projector, you will need something more powerful. The BW-VP1 is designed to be a home entertainment projector, not a professional business presentation projector.
