As some of you may aware, Banggood began and is headquartered in Guangzhou, China. But you might not actually know much about our hometown so here are some facts!

 

  1. With a population of around 13 million Guangzhou is the third largest city in China, after Shanghai and Beijing, but is much less well-known abroad than those two!

  1. Guangzhou is the largest city in Southern China and capital of the country’s most populous province Guangdong.

  1. It’s a key city for manufacturing as part of Guangdong province which has often been referred to as the workshop of the world, due to the large number of factories based here!

  1. Guangzhou has a long history of trade and interaction with foreign peoples and cultures, for example, it is home to China’s oldest mosque, originally built in 627 AD!

  1. It has previously been the capital of China! Three times in fact in the 20th century, most recently in 1949.

  1. Guangzhou is part of the Pearl River Delta. Why is this interesting? Well this area has been described as a mega City as it’s a region of almost continuous cities. It has a population of around 42 million and the World Bank described it as the largest urban area in the world.

  1. Its climate is sub-tropical with very hot summers and year round high humidity. Air conditioning is an essential here!

  1. Guangzhou’s province, Guangdong, has a gross GDP of US $271.84 billion similar to that of Finland and per capita GDP of US $18,123 comparable to Slovakia.

  1. The city’s 8 subway lines cover a total length of over 236 km (147 miles).

  1. It’s got great food! Cantonese (another name for Guangdong) food is world famous and as you’d expect, its capital, Guangzhou, is a great place to explore this varied and unique cuisine! Highlights include Dim Sum, Dumplings and traditional Cantonese Morning Tea a popular breakfast consisting of a variety of dishes worth trying out.
